Yep ya'll read that right. Today is Confedetate Memorial day. My dad sent me a text this morning and told me that in Atlanta some of the goverment buildings are closed in honor of the occasion) and that there were BBQs all over town....WOW!!!!!!! [pls insert Flavor Flav's tone here for best affect]
Well, ya know yer girl had to do a bit of research on the matter. Did you know that this holiday is observed in more than 10 states across the south. Ironically in Arkansas it's shared with the state holiday of Martin Luther king's birthday (you know someone was laughing their ass off at this).
It's interesting because usually the losers don't get a commemorative holiday. Isn't that the rules, if you fight for the losing side you don't get remembered? Where's the Mexican-American War
Memorial Day? I guess it's just another example of 'manifest destiny
' in relation to history.
pls click on this pic and read the story, American history is more complex than the text book would like us to believe...i'm still not making conclusions, just presenting options.
Yesterday I can across this article
about French Luxury cruise ship that was hijacked by east African Pirates and is currently docked off the coast of Somalia in a "well known pirate hang out" Now, I don't want to romanticize the notions of pirates
, cuz it sux the 30 members of the crew are being held hostage, but I can't help but be like..."Go Pirates, get that cash! make France negotiate!" Sucks, but that's the breaks with colonialism, and that's nerve to take a rich ass voyage to region that has had severe political unrest since '91. Maybe, I'm outta line w/ my views, but this is all based on my limited info on the whole situation.
I love how the fine folks over in Japan always manage to remix 'Amercan' culture, for example, i've met hard core Japanese Rastafarians and pan Africans and you've seen the strange barbie looking gals. I really do love it. Well, Obama, the Japanese city has found a new American icon, Barack Obama and has decided to boost tourism by selling tees and cakes with the candidates face on them. Amazingness! Read more about it here
You must read this entire story.
In the mean time check out the following quotes from our most brilliant [pls insert sarcastic tone] president.
"This transition ought to lead to free and fair elections, and I mean free and I mean fair. Not these kinds of staged elections that the Castro brothers try to foist off as being true democracy," Bush said. Can he really speak on staged elections? Him of all people, uh hemmm, Florida?
"And we're going to help. The United States will help the people of Cuba realise the blessings of liberty."'Blessing of liberty, wow, the US could learn a lesson to two from the 99% literate, fully health covered Cubans. After those lesson, let's talk about the 'Blessings of liberty'
Can't say that Fidel was a saint, but let's keep the whole situation in perspective.
A friend of mine sent this to me this morning, its a paper mache float of Bin Ladin bathing in blood (doesn't he look like a chef in tomato sauce) and was used in the Düsseldorf's Rose Monday Carnival. They must think that Americans are retards, and w/ the type of leadership we currently have, who could blame them! This parade looks like fun, they have a good sense of humor, 100 times better than the Macy's Day Parade! Read more here.
